Diversified Roofing Shares Tips for Roof Care During Monsoon Season

August 6, 2024

Monsoon season is currently in full swing in the Valley of the Sun. As the team at Diversified Roofing, a locally-owned company based in Phoenix, knows quite well, the high winds, dust storms, hail and often-intense thunderstorms that are part of monsoon season can wreak havoc on roofs.

To help homeowners understand more about the impact that monsoon season can have on their roof – and also learn how to keep this crucial part of their home as safe and secure as possible – Diversified Roofing is sharing a list of roof care tips.

“Homeowners definitely want to be proactive about their roofs during, or better yet before, monsoon season,” says Brad Nally, Vice President of Diversified Roofing. “Fortunately, there are a number of things that people can pretty easily monitor during this time of year.”

Nally suggests that homeowners keep the following roof-related tips in mind:

Visually Inspect Your Roof

When homeowners are outside doing yard work, cleaning the pool or letting their dog out, they should take a few minutes to visually inspect the roof. This should be done from the ground – no ladder is necessary. Look for missing tiles or shingles, as these are going to be a starting point for a leak.

Check the Soffits and Fascia for Damage

Homeowners should also look underneath the eaves of their roof at the soffits, as well as at the fascia (the strip of wood underneath the roof line). If anything looks rotted or chunks are missing, it is another sign that the roof is starting to deteriorate, and that water could get into areas where it does not belong.

Look Up at the Ceilings

When homeowners are inside, they should regularly look up at their ceilings in all rooms of the home, including closets and spaces that may be used infrequently, like a guest room. Things to look for include discoloration on the ceiling, which is often a sign of a water stain from a leak and bubbling in the paint.

Keep the Roof and Gutters Clean

At least once a year, homeowners should clean off their roofs. This does require using a ladder, and people should be as careful as possible – or consider hiring a roofing contractor to do this task. Remove items like tree branches and leaves; this will prevent water from potentially pooling around the debris. Homeowners who have gutters should also make sure they are cleaned out and not clogged with debris that can prevent water from flowing away.

Keep Trees Well-Trimmed

Trees surrounding the home should be kept well-trimmed so that branches are not hanging over the roof, and whenever possible, trees should be planted away from the home. High winds can easily uproot trees during a monsoon storm and cause branches or the entire tree to fall on the roof.

Repair Damage Quickly

If homeowners spot any damage, rotten areas, signs of leaks or other troubling issues on their roofs at any time, they should contact a reputable and trusted roofing contractor as soon as possible.

As Nally notes, roof issues do not get better on their own, and in fact will only get worse over time. The sooner a problem is discovered and fixed, the better off the roof will be

“Monsoon season tends to be a very busy time for us, but roof damage from rain and high winds do not have to be inevitable,” Nally said. “By being proactive and keeping a sharp eye on the condition of their roof, fascia, soffits, ceilings and more, homeowners can go a long way in helping care for their roof.”
