Oftentimes, we forget to care for our roofs until water is literally pouring through our ceilings.
So, how do we really know if we need to call in the professionals to replace our roofs?
It is ideal if we replace the roof before it begins to leak or crumble away. After all, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Here are some of the signs to watch out for.
Before you decide on getting a new roof, going to your attic and checking for stains or beams of light which signal a roof leak is a good place to begin with. You can move on to your home exterior afterwards.
If you were around when your roof was installed, it will be easy to know this. How do we know if it has gotten too old? Typically, an asphalt roof lasts for around 20 years. So, determine the average lifespan of your roof and if possible, do the math and take action if necessary.
You’ll definitely know by the looks of your shingles if they need replacing. You’ll be seeing curling or cracks in the shingles just by looking the slopes of the roof. You can also notice that some shingles are missing or granules are in the gutters.
Missing shingles can be caused by the mix of bad weather. Over time, shingles will fly with the strong winds and it’s normal.
Shingle granules are also expected to begin to chip and be washed into the gutters at the end of the lifespan of your shingles. You can also observe if the granules are darkening on some parts of the roof. This is because worn out granules tend to darken in color.
If your roof happens to show these signs, then it is about time to hire a skilled roofing contractor. Don’t hesitate to have your roof checked before you get more headaches in the future.
